It is Our Mission to Produce Lifelong Learners

Currently Marquette has 1,169 students enrolled. We are a diverse population with 60% of our student body being Hispanic and 38% being African-American. We embrace our cultural differences and honor all races and ethnicities.

We are privileged to have Elev-8

SWOP as our lead partner agency. We are also proud partners with City Year, Forward Momentum Dance Chicago, Little Linguistics and Global Explorers. Our students learning is benefitted in many ways through these partnerships. Our after-school programs touch on a variety of interests from athletics, arts, academics, youth leadership and community service.

The social-emotional well-being

of our students is very important to all of us. We are lucky to have an on-site medical clinic, Esperanza Health Clinic. They provide basic medical care andalso counseling for those students who may need some encouragement while at school.

Thank you to all the parents and

students who make Marquette a wonderful place to be.

Greetings and Welcome to Marquette

Marquette Families,

As principal of Marquette School of Excellence, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone back to another great year at Marquette.  We are incredibly excited to have students back into the classroom, and hallways filling them with energy and enthusiasm for learning.  We are committed to a year filled with golden opportunities for all of our students, as we strive to serve our students and families better each year with engaging and rigorous curriculum.

During the 2017 - 2018 school year, our theme is “Watering the Bamboo”, which means we will continue to build upon a foundation of hard-work, dedication and excellence toward student achievement. Our mission remains the same, as we commit ourselves to ensuring that all students are receiving an inclusive education that consist of high quality instruction which embraces and enhances intercultural understanding and respect.

We look forward to a very positive and productive year together! We extend a special, yearlong invitation to our families to join us at school activities and events whenever possible.  We want…..we need….and we value your involvement and support in your child’s education.  Here’s to an AWESOME new school year as we work together to make our school a Level 1+, and a great place to learn each day!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rovel Pollock

Our History

Building on Our History to
Create a Culture of Excellence

jacques-marquette.jpg

Marquette School of Excellence is named in honor of Jacques Marquette (1637-1675). Marquette was appointed by the governor of New France to accompany Louis Joliet as chaplain and missionary on an expedition to find the Mississippi River. After his return from the Mississippi, Marquette decided to return to the Illini tribes to preach and found a mission. His explorations paved the way for future explorers and he was one of the first Europeans to live on land in what is now Chicago.

Marquette School of Excellence opened in 1925. An annex, which included additional classrooms, health clinic, lunchroom, gymnasium, and the main office, was added in 1996.

Throughout Marquette’s history, the building has struggled with overcrowding. At one time, the school operated a branch in St. Rita High and served over 2000 students, the largest elementary school in Chicago. The St. Rita branch became its own school in 1997.

Today the building contains 63 classrooms and serves 1169 students.

AUSL

AUSL (Academy for Urban School Leadership) is a Chicago nonprofit school management organization that creates schools of excellence by developing highly effective teachers and transforming educational outcomes for students in the lowest performing schools.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) turned over management of Marquette School of Excellence to AUSL in 2012 as a turnaround school. Turning around a school is one approach that CPS uses to improve neighborhood schools that have been failing for many years. The transformation begins with the new leadership and teachers in the building to deliver effective instruction and the right climate and culture to the same neighborhood students.

AUSL is committed to to providing all AUSL students with a quality education to prepare them for college and career.
